2013 Mystery/Crime Reading Challenge

Update: The monthly gift card giveaway is no longer but each month I will use a random number generator to choose a winner out of those that participated that month and will send the winner a mystery from my own bookshelf! Thanks.
I love a good mystery, my favorite authors include Agatha Christie, James Patterson, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; so I thought that having a reading challenge for 2013 that includes reading mystery/crime novels and short stories would be fun, even if I turn out to be the only one participating! So here are the rules should you want to join in the fun:
1.) The challenge starts January 1, 2013 and ends  December 31, 2013.
2.) You can read any novel, short story or author just so that the genre is mystery/crime.
3.) 1 novel counts as 1 novel( 1 novel is anything over 100 pages) of course but you will have to read 5 short stories to count as 1 novel.
4.) There will be a monthly post for you to add a link or links to your post showing the progress that you have made so far.
5.) Each month there will be a drawing for those that linked up their participation in the challenge for that month the prize is a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble or Amazon. These gift cards are delivered via email so you can only use it at Barnes and Noble.com not the store and of course Amazon is all online anyway.

If you don't have a blog you can also link up through GoodReads or Flickr (for Flickr just keep track by having a picture of the novel and then numbering them in the description so I know where you are at in the challenge).

If you read a certain number of novels you receive a rank at the end I will award a secret prize to the person who reads the most books:
5 books= Detective
10 books = Sergeant
15 books = Lieutenant
20 books = Captain
25 books = Chief
30+ books = Sherlock Holmes

If you have any questions about the way the challenge works please ask in the comment section or you can email me at emmasmom432@gmail.com. To join all you need to do is link up your blog, Good Reads page, or Flickr page to this post the inlinkz is below, you can enter the challenge at any time so if you don't want to join now but might want to later that option is available. Grab the picture above and post it on your site that your linking up with and tell all your friends this should be a fun one!

  2. Nice challenge, Amy! Is there an option for Amazon Gift Card instead of Barnes & Noble? I'm in Canada, and B&N won't let us Northerners shop there :(

  3. By the way, I'm all signed up! Thanks for hosting!

  5. Darlene,
Yes a Amazon gift card would be fine since you can't shop @ Barnes and Noble, it is actually a good idea to in case there is anyone that has a Kindle instead of a nook, I will make a change in the post to reflect this. Thanks.

  6. Dear Amy,
I am not a 'blogger', but I am interested in this challenge, so I created a Google Blogger Account. All I have to do is post what books I read and what number it is?
    Thank you,
    Alex

  7. Hi Alex,
You can use google+ if you want to or even Facebook, goodreads actually has a facebook app and I am also on facebook all you would have to do is like The Crafty Book Nerd on facebook and you could just post directly on my wall, I will count that and include you in the drawing for the gift card. Or if your not on those I don't mind if you email me your monthly progress and I will create a post on here just for you and link it up for you if you need me to. Just let me know if you want me to do any of these or if you need any help with any of it. I'm here for ya. Glad you are reading with us in 2013!

  8. Amy-
I think that the emailing would work best for me, if it is not too much trouble.
    Thanks so much,

  26. For Canadians & others: Amazon '.com' is not interchangeable at '.ca'. If prizes can be "Amazon in general"; I'm in! Mystery is ME and I *adore* meeting new people to enjoy and support. Happy new year to everyone! ~Carolyn~

    ReplyDelete
  27. Carolyn you are right you have to use the gift card at Amazon.com only here is what they say about their international shipping:

Amazon.com gladly ships orders around the globe with AmazonGlobal. Available product lines, shipping rates and fees vary depending on the delivery address for your order.

To see the shipping rate information specific to your order's destination, click the link for your region at the bottom of this page.

There may be limitations on where and whether Amazon Marketplace sellers offer international shipping. For more information, visit our Buying from Outside the U.S. Help page.

You can also read more about shipping to U.S. territories and freely associated states or APO, FPO, or DPO addresses.

Your packages may be subject to the customs fees and import duties of the country to which your order ships. These charges are always the recipient's responsibility. For further details, read about Import Fees Deposits.

Seller orders can only be placed from international locations if the buyer is in a supported country (see the list below). Standard International shipping is the only shipping option available for seller orders fulfilled by Amazon.com.

    Supported Countries
    Region Key
Continental US Continental US states not including Alaska and Hawaii
Alaska and Hawaii Alaska and Hawaii
US Protectorates Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands, Guam, American Samoa and Northern Mariana Islands

  28. Glad to meet you Amy. The way out of all that Amazon mess (.com costs us $9.00 for 1 used book and no chance for free shipping) is to give relevant winners one from Amazon.CA. It's just as easy for you but makes a huge difference for us; would you say? :) FYI, if you're American, your currency is nearly as much as ours and so there's no change for you there either. Sound good?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Voila. Just send from this link and your generous gift isn't wasted on $9 postage, when Canadians can use 100% of it with shipping that is free! :) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/gc/order-email?ie=UTF8&ref_=gc_lp_eb1

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have sent Amazon an email to inquire about all this will post as soon as I have an answer.
    Amy

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm an Amazon expert, LOL! Easiest way to say it is: if your winner is Canadian, you e-mail from .ca (and so on) and we spend it at .ca too. :-) Just look here. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/gc/order-email?ie=UTF8&ref_=gc_lp_eb1

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am okay with it but I just want to check first because I tried to buy something from both Amazon CA and Amazon UK before and it wouldn't let me. So I am just trying to be safe about it and not promise if I am not 100 percent sure I can deliver. I appreciate you sending the links they will be useful for me if I get the okay through Amazon, I also have sponsors so some of it is up to them to. I will have an answer for you all tomorrow. thanks again
    Amy

  33. If it helps, my American friends send me gift certificates from the .ca main page all the time. :) I understand wanting to feel your way around.

To answer your question; external countries can buy DVDs, books, CDs from all warehouses. But I can't buy perfume from .com because .ca doesn't sell that sort of thing. Y'all have more stuff than we do. Have a good night Amy. I already joined this lovely group and know I'll have fun talking mystery with everyone.

  39. Please help me out here. Is there any linky to link up our reviews? I couldn't find any on this page. Where shall I look for it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Sangita,
Each month there will be a review link up post here is the one for Januarys:

Just to confirm, I don't need a introductory post on my blog to link up? I will put something up over the weekend, but I want to make sure I have not signed up in vane yet.
